Tree Pruning

Good pruning should solve a problem without creating new ones.

Tree pruning is more than removing branches. Done well, it can improve structure, reduce the likelihood of failure, provide clearance, manage the size of a tree, and preserve mature trees that might otherwise become problematic.

Woodwitch approaches pruning with the long-term structure and health of the tree in mind. We remove what needs to come out and try to leave the tree with as much healthy, functional canopy as possible.

Pruning may be appropriate for:

• Dead, broken or damaged limbs
• Weak or poorly attached branches
• Roof, building or utility clearance
• Excessive end-weight on long limbs
• Crossing or rubbing branches
• Structural problems in young and mature trees
• Reducing the likelihood of limb failure
• Managing a tree that has outgrown the space around it

Crown reduction

In some situations, a tree or individual limb can be carefully reduced rather than removed entirely. Reduction pruning shortens branches back to appropriate lateral growth while maintaining the natural form of the tree.

This is very different from topping, which leaves large indiscriminate cuts and often creates weak, rapidly growing replacement shoots.

Mature tree pruning

Large old trees often require a lighter hand, not more pruning. Removing too much live canopy can place unnecessary stress on a mature tree.

When working in mature trees, our goal is usually to address specific structural or clearance concerns while preserving as much healthy canopy as possible.

Woodwitch Arboriculture provides professional tree pruning throughout Asheville and Western North Carolina.
